Q. What are Apprenticeships?

A. Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes which offer you the opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised vocational qualification (NVQ) whilst employed. Apprenticeships require commitment on your part and although they can be demanding they are also rewarding and can help you to develop your career and achieve your goals.

Q. Who are they for?

A.
If you are aged over 16 and either in employment or seeking employment you could be eligible.

Q. How long does an Apprenticeship take?

A.
Apprenticeships are an individualised programme which is based on your previous experience and qualifications. However on average an Apprenticeship will take between 12 to 14 months for a Level 2. As you would expect higher levels will usually will take a bit longer with Level 3 taking 18 months and Level 4 up to 2 years.

Q. How do Apprenticeships work?

A.
We will work closely with your employer in order to provide on-the-job training relevant to your job role. You will be assigned an Assessor who will act as your mentor and visit you in your workplace to support and guide you through your qualification. They will be your point of reference for any questions, concerns or issues you may have relating to your Apprenticeship. Depending on the programme you are following some off-the-job training will be arranged.

Q. Will I get paid?

A.
Apprentices are employed and you will receive a rate of pay from your employer appropriate to your experience, qualifications and responsibility. Your terms and conditions will match those of your work colleagues.

Q. Will I get holidays?

A.
As with any employee, how much holiday you receive during your employment will depend on your employer who will have rules about booking days off and when your entitlement can be taken.

Q. What qualifications do I get when I've finished my Apprenticeship?

A.
The Apprenticeship packages comprises of a framework as follows:
  • Level 2 - a vocational qualification (NVQ) which is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A-C, Key Skills as appropriate and a Technical Certificate
  • Level 3 - a vocational qualification (NVQ) which is equivalent to 2 A Levels and 1 Vocational A Level, Key Skills as appropriate and a Technical Certificate
  • Level 4 - a vocational qualification (NVQ) which enables progression to professional accounting studies eg ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW or exemption to Year 1 or 2 on an Accounting Degree course, depending on the University.

The Technical Certificate, taken alongside your vocational qualification and Key Skills, is designed to provide you with further knowledge and understanding in relation to the area you are working in.

Q. Will an Apprenticeship cost me anything?

A.
If you are aged between 16 – 18 Apprenticeships are fully funded by the Government. However if you are aged over 19 you or your employer may be required to make a contribution towards Registration and/or books. Costs will be kept to a minimum and any fees would be discussed with your and your employer.

Q. What happens once I have completed my qualification?

A.
Apprenticeships are designed to equip you with all you need to know to progress in your chosen work role. You will also have the opportunity to discuss possible progression to a higher level Apprenticeship (ie from Level 2 to Level 3 or Level 4). Sometimes this may not be appropriate straight away but all your options will be explained to you and you may wish to take up further training at a later stage.
